Making the Time to Pray

12 In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God.

“In these days”, refers to Luke 6:11 when the Pharisees were planning the destruction of Jesus. Jesus understood the clock was ticking and there was still so much to do. But instead of getting away to organize His to do list, getting back on the road to preach in the synagogues, healing the sick that were constantly around Him, and most importantly picking the Apostles (Luke 6:14), Jesus does the most important thing He can do and what any of us can do, He prayed…

It is even more shocking because in the Greek the translation of this verse means that, “all night He continued in prayer”. Jesus didn’t just spend the night on the mountain and prayed in between meals, naps, and meditation no, He prayed all night long!

I don’t know about you but for me, I can hardly sit still for 5 minutes in prayer because I start thinking about all that has to get done, but for Jesus the way forward is to sit and hash it out with His Father. We know that this is a successful strategy because the guys He picked were the ones with whom the Father had predetermined to build the church on, and we are here today because of the prayers of Jesus. He prayed hard and He prayed long but even more importantly before that He made sure to make the time to pray.

Have you ever felt like your endeavors in life are hampered, fall short, and lack direction? Why not make time to pray? Take the time to thank Jesus for His perfect example and put all your plans and hopes in Him, ask the Father in His name, and see what the Spirit of God reveals about what you should be concerned with for the day. Making the time to pray is not what we do in between the busy tasks of life it is the way we move with confidence and deliberation into the life that God is calling us to.
