Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. – James 4:7
Heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson famously said, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.” In other words, everyone can feel prepared and confident until they actually face adversity and opposition. The same can be true in our spiritual lives. It can seem difficult to understand, but the Bible makes it very clear that we have a very real enemy who is seeking to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10).
As pastor Brian has said, “We often overestimate our own strength and underestimate the power of the enemy.” Rather than trusting in God and submitting to His will and ways, we often try to battle the enemy in our own strength. Here is the problem: Satan is smarter and stronger than you alone. However, Scripture promises that if we resist the enemy and draw near to God in prayer, Satan has no choice but to flee from us. Why? Because he knows that while he may be stronger than us alone, he can never stand against the power of our God! In the words of Samuel Chadwick: “Satan dreads nothing but prayer. His one concern is to keep the people of God from praying. He fears nothing of our prayerless work or studies… but he trembles when we pray.”
While we are aware of the enemy, we do not have to fear him because of Jesus and the power of His Spirit within us. Ask God to grow your confidence in Him as He exposes areas of your life where you can submit to Him and resist the devil. Pray for God to protect you from anything that could potentially distract you or hold you back from being completely focused on Him today.
Pray for our Sunday services to be blessed and anointed by God as our Worship and Creative Arts Teams seek to put Jesus on display.
