The Book of Hebrews Was Written to Say to These Early Believers – Don’t Give Up on Jesus!
Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, 2 who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. 3 For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses.
Hebrews 3:1-3
2. Beware of Doubt and Unbelief
Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. 15 As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”
Hebrews 3:12-14
Why must we guard ourselves against doubt and unbelief?
- It can cause to chase idols and false Gods.
- It can lead to a hardened heart.
- It can lead us to a useless life.
For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.
Hebrews 3:14
It can cause us to miss out on God’s rest.
And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? 19 So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.
Hebrews 3:18-19
1. Jesus is Greater than Moses
- Greater as a person (vs. 1)
- Greater in his work (vs. 2-4)
- Greater in who He is (vs. 5-6)
And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.
Hebrews 3:6
You yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 2:5
“Today, if you hear his voice,
8 do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
on the day of testing in the wilderness,
9 where your fathers put me to the test
and saw my works for forty years.
10 Therefore I was provoked with that generation,
and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart;
they have not known my ways.’
11 As I swore in my wrath,
‘They shall not enter my rest.’”
Hebrews 3:7-11
Two moments of testing:
- Internal
- External
3. How Can We Avoid Doubt and Unbelief?
We need to:
- Take care of our hearts
Come, let us worship and bow down. Let us kneel before the Lord our maker, for he is our God. We are the people he watches over, the flock under his care.
Psalm 95:6-7
- Encourage one another
- Keep our confidence and trust in Jesus
