Praying Fervent Prayers

Throughout the Bible, you see a word that is connected to powerful, effective prayer. It’s the word fervent or fervently.

Fervent is a medical term that is used to describe a muscle that is being stretched to its limit.

The night before Jesus was arrested, He was praying to His Father in the garden of Gethsemane. Luke tells us that “being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground.”

In other words, Jesus prayed to His Father with every ounce of His being.

Acts 12 tells us that when Peter was arrested and put in prison for preaching the Gospel, the believers came together, and they prayed fervently to God for his release. This prayer meeting was so powerful that it led to a miraculous prison break.

In the book of James, James makes an announcement – “Are there any among you who are suffering? Are there any among you that are sick? Then call the elders of the church to come and pray.” Why?

James 5:16 – The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. (KJV)

John MacArthur says, “the energetic prayers of a righteous man are a potent force in calling down the power of God for restoring weak, struggling believers to spiritual health.”

When you pray fervent prayers, you are not praying casual “now I lay me down to sleep prayers.” You are praying powerful, effective prayers, believing in faith that God can restore people to physical and spiritual health.

Today, let us come before the Lord on behalf of those who are lost, those who are far from God, and those who are sick and pray fervently, trusting that our prayers are making a difference.
